St. Senans, A Brief History

The first Junior Rugby in Shannon was held in the 60’s. This was a competition called the Estates Cup and was held between different factories in Shannon Industrial estate. There were also underage teams called the Shannon Jet’s.

Given the popularity of the competition the underage interest and the level of interest from people living locally in Shannon, who were not affiliated to any Junior or Senior team it was decided in a meeting held in the Crossroad’s Pub in Shannon that a team should be formed Locally.

That meeting took place in 1974 and the first president, Cyril Kiely, was elected, the team captain was Eamon Dooley.

To gain affiliation to the IRFU we were required to be proposed and seconded by two existing teams they were Young Munsters and Garryowen, and so St. Senans was formed in 1974.

The first player who represented St. Senans at interprovinical level was Chris Carew who played with the Munster Junior team.

In the late 70’s the first Junior club trophy was brought home, that was the Culligan cup.

The trophy cabinet wasn’t opened for many more years until 1998/99 when Senans won the Gleeson League in front of a couple of thousand fans in Thomond park. This trophy was swiftly followed, in the same year by the Junior Development League allowing St. Senans promotion to the Munster Junior 3^rd Division.

St. Senans won the Kiely cup and the Culligan cup after many years trying, and also reached the final of the Webb cup, to complete the most successful season in the club’s history.

The following season 1999/00 season St. Senans were promoted to the 2nd Division of the Munster Junior League by defeating Mallow in the final game at Ballycasey.

St. Senans stayed in Division 2 until 2001/2002 when they defeated St. Mary’s of Limerick to be promoted to the Munster Junior League Division one.

2001/2002 also saw three of our players selected for the Munster Junior Interprovinical team, who subsequently won the competition for the first time in 14 years, the players were Stephen Ryan, David Lee and Kevin Mc Killican.

St. Senans have been based in Ballycasey Shannon since our formation in 1974 but last year we purchased 10 acres of land from Shannon Development and are in the process of developing what we consider will be a tremendous facility for all of the residents in Shannon to play or just come to follow "Senans".

The Elements which make up St. Senans R.F.C. crest are:-

Colors:- Primarily Black and White, with some Red.

The three crowns represent the province of Munster.

Concord ties in nicely with Shannon Town's aviation heritage and the fact that its first flight was made in 1974, the same year St. Senans R.F.C. was founded.
